Research

Our research group focuses on the development and application of life cycle assessment (LCA) methods to evaluate the sustainability of engineered systems for informing energy policy decisions, the development of biofuels for transportation, and the management of engineering infrastructure.

Biomass and Bioenergy

We develop LCA models of lignocellulosic biofuels from agricultural residues (corn stover, wheat and barley straw), forestry feedstocks (forest residues and short rotation crops); grain-based biofuel from feedstocks that tend not to interfere with food markets, including certain winter crops (e.g., barley grain in the Midatlantic US region); and biofuels from food waste (food waste). We are examining 1st and 2nd generation fuel conversion platforms: bioconversion (starch and cellulosic sugar-platform) and thermochemical (pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis). In both conversion platforms we are developing LCA models for infrastructure compatible fuels.

Civil Engineering Infrastructure

Our research aims to characterize life cycle sustainability measures of infrastructure materials in both above and below-surface engineering applications and in water infrastructure. With Professor Grace Hsuan we are examining novel polymeric materials in pipe and geosynthetic uses. With Professor Patricia Gallagher we are examining sustainable geotechnics. With Professors Franco Montalto, Emin Aktan, and Patrick Gurian we are examining the application of life cycle tools to green infrastructure and infrastructure asset management.
